General Whitney and Neptune Painting


Oil on canvas of Steamships General Whitney and Neptune, mounted on board and painted by Antonio Jacobsen. Both ships were owned by Metropolitan Steamship Co.; the Whitney was built in 1873 in Wilmington, DE, and the Neptune in 1864 in New York by J. Van Dusen. Dated 1886 and initialed AJ in lower left. Rare example of two ships in one painting by Jacobsen. Cleaned, restorations.

Rare size Boston painting of the ship "Tranota." Done by Clement Drew (active 1836-1886). Known for marine paintings in rough seas, forty works of his are in the Peabody Essex Museum.
